SUMMARY:May Chapter Meeting - ASHRAE Standard 211 De-Mystifying Energy Audits
DESCRIPTION:As you know\, Washington State has implemented building performance standards through the adoption of HR 1257\, or the Clean Building Act. This law requires building owners to achieve energy targets and\, when they can’t\, to implement energy audits of their facility to identify ways to bring their building within compliance. Esteban Baccini is the founder and principal applied engineer of Baccini HVAC Consulting\,\nspecialized in Mechanical Engineering + HVAC\, and is ASHRAE BEAP & OPMP Certified. Esteban will present on how to perform an ASHRAE Audit per Standard 211\, which is the referenced auditing standard required by Washington State’s Clean Building Act. This presentation will be provided in two sessions\, both available remotely. The first of the two will be webcasted to our downtown meeting room. \nMenu: Sandwiches\, Salads\, and Wraps. \nRegistration for this event has been closed.

SUMMARY:March Meeting - Displacement Ventilation
DESCRIPTION:Displacement Ventialtion\nApplication Presentation\nDisplacement ventilation systems use the natural buoyancy of air to maintain a healthy and comfortable indoor climate with minimal energy input. These systems dramatically reduce the spread of airborne pathogens\, odors and dust particles while providing a nearly silent HVAC system for a building’s occupants.\nThis presentation by Andrew Asper of Air Commodities Mechanical Sales will provide an overview of these systems\, will present practical applications for their use\, and show several examples of successful displacement ventilation installation.\nWe look forward to seeing you there. \nRegistration for this event has been closed.

SUMMARY:February Meeting - Audit Report - Lessons Learned through Audits
DESCRIPTION:A well-operating HVAC system is a three-legged stool based on good design\, good installation/configuration\, and good maintenance. Although designers and installers work diligently to prepare a building for a long\, functional\, and energy-efficient life… as an Energy Auditor\, I can attest that the projects we work on don’t always turn out as we had hoped. As a former HVAC designer turned Energy Auditor\, I’ve had the chance to evaluate some low-performing buildings\, and through this process\, I’ve learned some things. This presentation is intended to share some of those lessons.\n   Hope to see you there ~ Brandon \nSpeaker Introduction\nBrandon Crane — 2024-25 ASHRAE Chapter President \nBrandon Crane\, P.E. CEM LEED AP\, 2024-25 ASHRAE Inland Empire Chapter President \nBrandon has been a design engineer for nearly 17 years working on a wide variety of projects including schools\, office buildings\, industrial facilities\, tenant improvement projects\, power generation facilities\, retail\, restaurants\, warehouses\, and everything in between; most of this experience has been in renovation projects in existing buildings. \nBrandon is a certified energy manager and is providing Energy Auditing services with Custom Energy Consultants who focus on providing clients with Clean Building Act compliance support. \nRegistration for this event has been closed.

DESCRIPTION:What is it?\nCompleting this course will increase a participant’s knowledge and understanding of how to apply electric air cleaners in adherence to ASHRAE Standard 241: Control of Infectious Aerosols. Standard 241 was published in response to the global pandemic and introduces a set of design considerations and product qualification requirements for owners\, architects\, engineers\, and contractors when designing for infectious aerosol mitigation. The implementation of this standard brings numerous benefits to occupants and promotes healthier environments.\nThe course will teach components of the standard that apply to electric air cleaners\, what these mean for the application of air cleaners to a project\, and how to compare air cleaners for performance and safety. The use of air cleaners with filtration or standalone is compared for common applications. Participants will learn how to interpret ASHRAE 241 compliant testing results to help select electric air cleaning products. Finally\, there is a discussion on the evolution of ASHRAE 241 and what to expect. \nThis PDH will count toward continuing education credits for engineers. \nPresenter\nKyle Finney\nKyle Finney is the General Manager for GPS Air’s Western Region. He has an extensive background in supporting various products and technologies\, using them to problem-solve for clients. He brings this aptitude for problem-solving into the IAQ space\, helping his customers with engineering cleaner indoor air.\nWith a big push to spread awareness of ASHRAE Standard 241\, Kyle and the GPS team aim to help engineers get ahead of the curve in understanding what the standard is\, and the importance of adopting strategies that will allow them to best navigate the intricacies of it for their clients. \nRegistration for this event has been closed.

SUMMARY:October Chapter Meeting - Maximizing HVAC Efficiency\, Flexibility\, and Resiliency with Very High Efficiency Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Description\nWith the ever-increasing environmental impacts of local pollution\, extreme weather events and wildfires\, there is a necessity for resilient\, flexible\, and extremely efficient HVAC systems. Unfortunately\, while HVAC systems are critical to our comfort and well-being\, conventional systems are costly to operate and contribute to over 50% of total energy usage in commercial buildings. Dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS) are a proven solution for reducing energy consumption since they optimize the control and functionality of ventilation and thermal comfort separately. A very high efficiency approach to DOAS maximizes energy efficiency by decoupling ventilation air from comfort conditioning\, including air-to-air heat recovery\, right-sizing of a high efficiency heating and cooling system and minimizing fan power. This allows for many benefits\, including: \n\nDemonstrated reduction of building HVAC energy use by an average of 69% over conventional systems\,\nExcellent indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort\,\nProven flexibility and resiliency to adapt to changing occupant densities\, increased IAQ requirements\, and extreme weather events\,\nSignificant carbon emission reduction with minimal peak electric demand increases in sites that convert from gas to electric heat.\n\nIn partnership with local utilities and HVAC experts\, this system approach has been installed and monitored in 12 small-to-medium commercial buildings\, including in cold climates\, that resulted in an average 69% reduction in HVAC energy use and a 48% reduction in whole-building energy use when compared to a code minimum system (often a packaged RTU). Attendees will learn the cost and energy savings outcomes of these Northwest-based projects. Additional topics to discuss include: \n\nWSEC 403.3.5 – Dedicated outdoor air systems\nWSEC 406.2.2.6 – High performance DOAS measure (as many as 40 additional energy efficiency credits)\nEconomics of VHE DOAS vs. WSEC minimum\nERV technologies that achieve 82% sensible recovery (micro-channel counter-flow HX\, advanced rotary wheel HX\, reciprocating dual-core HX)\n\nAbout the Presenter\nGertrude Villaverde\, C.E.M.\, C.M.V.P.\nGertrude is an Energy Engineer at Energy 350. She supports multiple contracts with technical analysis in production efficiency for industrial sites\, efficiency upgrades for existing buildings\, and market transformation for regional energy efficiency. Prior to Energy 350\, Gertrude interned at a manufacturing facility through the Multiple Engineering Cooperative Program (MECOP) where she completed multiple energy/production efficiency and profit-improvement projects. She also worked in the Energy Systems Laboratory at Oregon State University-Cascades and graduated with an Honors Bachelor of Science in Energy Systems Engineering. Gertrude is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) through the Association of Energy Engineers. \n  \nRegistration for this event has been closed.

SUMMARY:September Chapter Meeting - Maintained Particle Filtration & Total Cost of Ownership in Air Filtration
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Abstract\nThis presentation reviews the fundamentals of air filtration and minimum air filtration standards set by ASHRAE 170-2022 for healthcare facilities. \nTypes of filter media are reviewed with an emphasis on fine fiber media and course fiber media. A thorough explanation of air filter testing\, as set forth by the latest ASHRAE 52.2 test standard\, is explained. This includes the critical difference between MERV and MERV-A values. MERV-A values are important to the healthcare industry because they can differ from MERV values and are an indication of air filter performance in real life after the filter begins to load with particulate. Hospitals concerned about indoor air quality need to understand MERV-A values. \nParticipants in the presentation will understand minimum air filtration standards\, MERV values\, MERV-A values\, and their importance to patients and staff of hospitals. The economic impact of filter choices based on their performance characteristics will also be discussed\, along with filtration options for mitigating smoke and odors during wildfires. \nAbout the Speaker\nKyle Petersen is the Western Region Manager for Camfil\, USA. Kyle began his career with Camfil in 2011 as a member of the National Accounts team. That experience gave Kyle exposure to filtration applications ranging from commercial/industrial applications to microelectronics and life sciences. In 2017\, moved into a new role as Healthcare Segment Manager\, dedicating his efforts exclusively to the healthcare market. \nIn January this year\, he assumed the role of Western Region Sales Manager. His responsibilities include managing new construction and aftermarket activities with Camfil’s network of independent distributor rep firms throughout the Western United States and Mexico. \nKyle lives in Las Vegas\, NV. \n  \nRegistration for this event has been closed.
